Oregon River Games - Event Rules
Yeah we know, rules are no fun - but we've kept them simple and easy to follow in the interest of safety and fun for everybody. Thanks for playing hard and playing fair!

Disqualifications

ANY BOAT IN ANY RACE WILL BE DISQUALIFIED FOR THE FOLLOWING REASONS

All participants must have approved PFD’d\s

All participants must wear approved helmets

If a craft size is specified any other size will be disqualified

No Boat jumping. (jumping into another’s boat)

No capturing of paddles.

Use of paddles as weapons

Any person whether in individual or team event who slides down

the ramp at Fish Creek, in or out of a boat will disqualify himself and his team for the next event in which he or she is entered.

Definitions

Coed Teams

In order to qualify as a coed team at least 20% of the team must be of the opposite sex

Mass Start

No less than three boats at a time. Less than three the event will be canceled

Kayaks will be able to start up to 10 boats at a time

Other craft will be able to start up to 5 boats at a time

All team members or oarsmen will stand on the bank beside their boat. When the gun goes off the contestants shall shove off and leap into their boats.

Finish Line

Finish Line sign will be hanging across the river on the downstream side of the Carter Bridge.

Individually Timed Event

Start and finish times will be compared to determine time and best time will win. If it is a slalom race the times will be adjusted by the judges scores.

Down River Rules

All race will start at Fish Creek and go the finish line just below Carter Bridge.

There are no gates to make.

These are an individually timed event. Best time wins

Slalom Rules

Individual timed start at Fish Creek

Timed finish downstream side of Carter Bridge

Time will be computed between the start and finish lines

Gates must be run clean – no touching of the (poles)gate - everyone in the boat- no holding gate (pole) off – boat must be right side up everyone needs to be in the boat across the finish line.

Penalties

Missing Gate +50 seconds

Boat upside down through gate + 50 seconds

Touching one or two poles of a single gate +5 seconds

One or more team members miss the gate +50 seconds (everyone must be in the boat

Negotiating a gate in the wrong direction +50 seconds

Intentional displacement of a pole (holding a pole off) +50 seconds

Incomplete team in boat across the finish line +50 seconds

Penalty seconds are actually added to your time will be added to Time

The Armed Forces Cup

Teams consist of 4 -6 paddlers and a paddle captain. Rafts are any inflatable raft 14 to 16 ft. in length.

This is a Coed Race following the short down river rules with a Mass Start (See Definitions). It will start Fish Creek and go to the below Carter Bridge finish line. No more than 5 boats at per heat. First three places will qualify for next heat.

The Winner of the Armed Forces Cup will retain the Cup for one year and then must bring it back. The winning team’s name will be engraved and placed on the wooden trophy stand. Olympic style medals will also be awarded for first, second and third places.

Boater Cross

entrants must be registered by 10 am Sunday Morning May 6.

This Event format is subject to change due to weather, number of contestants, water level, or other reason or other condition beyond our control. Just prior to the event there will be a meeting at Fish Creek above the boat ramp to explain the event.

River Craft eligible are Hard Shell Kayak Raft, I K, Raftrowed or paddled, Cat-A-Raft, and Riverboard.

There will be a race for each type of craft.

There must be at least three entrants for any category of craft or the boater cross for that craft will be canceled.

It will start Fish Creek and go to the below Carter Bridge finish line.

Generally Boater Cross races are multiple heat, multiple round races depending on the number of contestants. Each Heat will have a Mass start. Kayaks will be limited to 10 boats per heat with the first 5 places will advancing to the next round. Heats will start at 90 second intervals. Other craft will be limited to Five boats per race with the first three places advancing to the next round .

Each race will consist of one type of river craft.

We will keep advancing to a next round until the final round which will have 10 or less kayaks and 5 or less of any other craft.

Winners will receive Olympic style Gold, Silver or Bronze medals.

The Clackamas Cup

(Drift Boats Competition )

Timed Race --Slalom rules.

It will start at Fish Creek Fish Creek and go to the below Carter Bridge finish line.

Each Contestant must have a full inflated truck inner. tube securely fasten in the forward section of his/her boat.

This is Slalom race. Winners determined by time and gate judge’s scores.

The Winner of the Clackamas Cup will retain the Cup for one year and then must bring it back. The winning team’s name will be engraved and placed on the wooden trophy stand. Olympic style medals will be awarded for the first, second and third places.

Drift boaters

When you retrieve your boats from the take out in the festival center, please pull in, load your boat and move out of the festival center as fast as possible

Cat-a-Raft Rodeo

This is an individual event in any Cat – a – raft 10 to 23ft. in length with one oarsman. It will start Fish Creek and go to the below Carter Bridge finish line.

  • Surf - the surf starts when the judge determines the surf has started and ends when the rower leaves the wave.
  • Free Style points will be awarded by crowds applause,  judges to award points,  loudest applause being 10 points least being 1 point.
  • 1 Point  deducted for touching the gate. 
  • Gates must be run in numerical in order.  
Best Score Wins!

The Winner of the Cat-a-Raft Rodeo Cup will retain the Cup for one year and then must bring it back. The winning team’s name will be engraved and placed on the wooden trophy stand. Olympic style medals will also be awarded for first, second and third places.

The Guide’s Cup

There are two cups awarded one for the men’s and one for the women’s teams.

Teams consist of Three persons (R3). Two paddles and a paddle captain in a 14ft. inflatable raft.

Rafts longer or shorter than 14 ft will result in a disqualification.

This is a Slalom race starting at Fish Creek going to Carter Bridge. This is an individually timed event. Winners determined by time and gate judge’s scores.

The Winner of the Guides Cup will retain the Cup for one year and then must bring it back. The winners name will be engraved and placed on the wooden trophy stand. Olympic style medals will also be awarded for first, second and third places.

High School Cup

Teams consist of 6 person teams with a paddle captain in inflatable rafts 14 to 16 ft. in length. This individually timed Coed Race follows the slalom rules. It will start Fish Creek and go to the below Carter Bridge finish line. Winners determined by time and gate judge’s scores.

The Winner of the High School Cup will retain the Cup for one year and then must bring it back. The winning team’s name will be engraved and placed on the wooden trophy stand. Olympic style medals will also be awarded for first, second and third places.

The Media Cup

20% of the team members must be employed in Media including; Entertainment, News, advertising: radio; tv; or print. If there is a question of qualification, the decision of the registrar will be final or agency for a civic event or organization (such as the Rose Festival, chamber of commerce or city/town council).

Teams can be from 4 to 7 person coed paddle teams in any raft 12 to 16 feet. This Coed Race will follow the individually timed short

down river rules. It will start at Fish Creek and go to the below Carter Bridge finish line

The Media Cup will be awarded for first place.

Olympic style medals will be awarded for first, second and third places. Inexperienced paddlers are invited to ask for a paddle captain from our pool of experienced rafters many of whom have rafted professionally. Families are encouraged to enter this event.

Riverboarding

There will be two different riverboarding races, a timed downriver race and a head-to-head race through Carter Falls

Downriver Slalom

Racers will race against the clock and must clear all gates in the Carter Fall section. Best time wins.

Extreme Boardercross

Racers will start in heats of no more than 5 and no less than 3 and race head to head through Carter Falls and specified gates. Full contact is allowed but no punching with the fist. If necessary there will be 2 qualifying heats and a finals heat.

The Rose Festival Cup

This is a two part Men’s and Women’s event

1. Slalom Race: Individual start, timed event, adjusted for gate scores.

2. Short Down River Race: Individual Start timed event.

Boats must be 14ft. in length and have teams of 6 paddlers and 1 paddle captain.

The Best combined times for both events will take the cup

The Winners of the Rose Festival Cup will retain their Cup for one year and then must bring it back.

Olympic style medals will also be awarded for first, second and third places.

The winning teams in the Rose Cup will be qualified to compete in the Nationals as our official entries.

The top ten teams will receive points towards the West Coast Championship

The Sotar Cup

recognizes outstanding event participation

There is will be both a men’s and women’s cup presented.

Participants will be awarded points based upon:

1. The number of events entered 20 pts. Per event.

(each member of a paddle team will receive the 20 pts.)

2. Bronze medal winners are awarded 30 pts. For each medal.

3. Silver medal winners are awarded 40 pts. For each medal

4. Gold medal winners are awarded 50 pts. For each medal

5. Cup winners are awarded 75 pts. For each cup.

The person with the most points will be awarded the most prestigious Amateur Rafting Award on the planet.

The Winners of the Sotar Cups will retain the Cup for one year and then must bring it back.

The University Cup

There are two cups awarded. One for the men’s and one for the women’s teams.

Teams consist of 6 person teams with a paddle captain in inflatable rafts 14 to 16 ft. in length. This Coed Race follows the slalom rules starting at Fish Creek and goes to Carter Bridge. Winners determined by time and gate judge’s scores.

The Winner of the The University Cup will retain the Cup for one year and then must bring it back.

Olympic style medals will also be awarded for first, second and third places.

West Coast Championship

Oregon River Games in conjunction with The American River Festival, The Wenatchee Festival and now the PBR Festival in Idaho presents the West Coast Championship. Points are earned at each event based upon placement in each events qualifying race.

Oregon River Games has designated the Rose Festival Cup as it’s qualifying race. The top then placing teams will be awarded points towards the Championship.

Open Races Explained

These are un-classed races open to all . The only requirement we have

Is there must be at least three boats entered in each race or the race will be canceled.

All Open Races Are open co-ed. There is no limit to men or women on the paddle crew. Men and women will compete against each other.

There will be both slalom and down river events for each kind of craft
